To Comment:

Determinants of health are factors that contribute to state of health, this could be for an individual, community or specific population. Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not just the absence of sickness or frailty (“Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” n.d.). According to healthy people 2020, a population determinant of health generally is divided into five main categories: policy making, social factors, health services, individual behavior, biology and genetics. Unfortunately, health disparity among populations here the United States are not equal, therefore determinates are sometimes poor.

One population, is the migrant farmworkers living and working in United States. Policy markers often create and enforce minimal regulations for farm owners leaving this population at risk. Long hours without breaks go unreported for fear of being black listed or deported. Social factors like education, living wages and concentrated poverty hinders growth among generations within the population group. They suffer high incidence of cancer, respiratory, reproductive disorders, poor child health and birth defects due excessive pesticides exposure on the farm. Barriers such as limited access to healthcare services. Many reside in labor camps located in isolated villages, no health insurance and often no public transport to get around. Individual behavior like poor hygiene due to contaminated water sometimes, less than healthy diet and drugs like alcohol and tobacco are commonly used. Many of the teenagers start working in early teens and are more at risk than the elderly. Lack of social events and activities puts them at risk for unhealthy sexual behavior may lead to teenage pregnancies, sexual transmitted disease.

Migrant farm workers are the population America has forgotten or don’t know exist. Some efforts to remove barriers have been stalled and sometime blocked by farm owners, corporations who makes the pesticide or profit otherwise. Their poor determinate of health put them at risk in many ways however, I do believe more organizations are advocating for improve determinates of health for farm workers, Americas forgotten population.
