• Discuss some examples of functional versus nonfunctional requirements. What would exemplify these requirements in a software development project for an online college student registration system?

• Describe a requirement-specification technique that would be appropriate for an online college student registration system with an enrollment of 10,000 students. Provide a justification as to why you would use your chosen technique over other requirement-specification techniques that are available.

JR’s post states the following:

“Functional requirements refer to services that the software-to-be should provide, whereas non-functional requirements constrain how such services should be provided” (Van Lamsweerde, 2009). In this case I think a functional requirement would be allowing a student to register for classes.  Another example would be a student being able to view location/time/instructor for the courses. A nonfunctional example sending a notification for an expired password. Another nonfunctional example the system should ensure that the students’ confidential information is only view by authorized users.  

I think an appropriate technique to use is to become familiar with the system-as-is/organization.  I think it effective to learn how the system currently operates so one can find where the issue is occurring and develop solutions that are more fitting to aid the 10,000 students more efficiently. It’s also beneficial to study prior documents, reports, manuals etc. written about the system to become aware of any former constraints, issues, potential risk (Van Lamsweerde, 2009).

Scenarios are used quite frequently throughout the development process.I think scenarios are an effective way to replicate real-life interactions. • Among the many nonfunctional requirements that can be included in a specification are those related to safety and reliability. In your own words, discuss how an organization can ensure that these requirements are testable.

• Identify some examples of testing a safety requirement and a reliability requirement in the context of a software system that controls the electrical components of a roller coaster at an amusement park.

Organizations can ensure their non-functional requirements are testable by ensuring they develop a test script/plan to verify the requirement can be met. For example, developing acceptance criteria for each requirement helps to prove the requirement is testable, using clear and measurable criteria  (Phleeger, 2009-02-01, p. 151).  Therefore, if the requirement does not meet those criteria, it is incomplete.  Also, organizations should outline two things in testing, the test level, such as is the testing on the system, a unity, or through a review and how the testing should take place, like through inspection, demonstration, simulation, or production.

Identify some examples of testing a safety requirement and a reliability requirement in the context of a software system that controls the electrical components of a roller coaster at an amusement park. 

An example of testing safety and reliability required for a roller coaster would be that of the wheel of the roller coaster.  The requirements would include resistance, strength, durability, and vibration.     The non-functional requirements may include things like a percentage on the vibration that should occur, the level of durability required based on the weight of the car, speed it takes or stopping the car.  The strength of the wheel should be able to withstand a certain threshold.  These items are examples of the components that interface and respond to the components of operating the roller coaster.
